“Hey.”

Evie kept staring straight ahead at her dresser as she pulled off her necklace and earrings, then stripped out of her sparkly blouse. They were finally home, Liam had just tucked the kids into bed, and she was bone tired. And upset.

Dinner had been fine. Evie’s mother proved the perfect hostess to disarm Amelia McIntosh.

The two William McIntoshs, on the other hand…

“Evie.” Liam clicked their bedroom door shut as he stepped inside. “Evelyn.”

She whirled around. “You’re full naming me, William?”

“Sure am, Evelyn Calhoun. What’s your problem? I thought we were all cool before dinner.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Oooh, William McIntosh the third is being pokey, huh?”

He raised his brows, smirking a bit. “You want to pick a fight with me two nights before our wedding?”

“No, but I think the fight has picked itself.”

He slowly undid the buttons on his dress shirt without saying anything else. Not engaging, she thought at first, but then she saw the warm burning ember of something else in his eyes. His fingers twisted each button loose—not just slowly, but strip-tease slowly.

He did look damn good in a suit. And even better peeling out of one. He kept talking as he bared his delicious skin, one slow, calm word at a time. “Tonight could have gone better.”

“You think?” She threw her hands in the air. “Did you have to get into a fight with your father about monetary policy?”

He scrunched his face as if to say oh well.

“That, Liam! That’s what I’m upset about!”

“On the upside, they love your mother’s guest room.”

“But you wouldn’t care if they weren’t happy.” That anxious, panicky feeling rose in her chest again.

“I’d have cared. I promise. But tonight was just me and my dad butting heads. Nothing bigger.”

She stared at him, torn between frustration and fatigue.

“Come here.”

“No.”

He laughed. “Why not?”

“You’re going to make me forget why I’m grumpy.” It would be pretty easy, actually.

“Sure am.” He stripped off his shirt and met her at the foot of the bed. She stroked her hands over his bare torso. “I’m sorry.”

“You should say you’re sorry to your father. Or your mother, really.”

“I should say a lot of things to my parents, but they’re not here right now. They’re not the most important person in my life. That’s you, and right now, I’m sorry, to you. I let him get under my skin. I won’t do it again this weekend, I promise.”

“No debates about reasonable work hours or parenting techniques tomorrow?”

He nodded. “Cross my heart. And I’m taking Jess with me as my bodyguard when we have breakfast with them on Saturday morning.”

“Good. I trust her.” She laughed as he tickled up her ribs, but when he hooked his fingers under her bra straps and shoved them down her arms, baring her breasts, her giggles turned to sighs. “Liam…”

“We’re getting married day after tomorrow.”

“I know.”

“I can’t wait.” He cupped one breast. “You’re going to be my wife. We’ve got the most amazing family. You gave me that. You can be as mad as you want at me.
